A Kenya Rugby Union organised World Rugby level 1 Officiating Sevens Course was conducted in Eldoret on the 29th September 2017. The timing was meant to coincide with the first edition of the Sepetuka Sevens as a legacy programme for the region which was hosting a leg of the National Sevens Circuit for the first time.
A total of 18 participants attended the course. Nandi, Usain Gishu, Kericho, Elgeyo Marakwet, Kitale and West Pokot counties were represented. Participants were motivated by the desire to learn more about officiating rugby and would like to officiate matches in the region and beyond. They observed that the training was able to meet their expectations and were keen to progress in officiating rugby. All participants will be issued with attendance certificates.
The Regional Development Officer overseeing the zone, Basemath Nyabando, said that many people in the region had requested for such an opportunity and were glad to attend the course. The course content included officiating the breakdown, advantage, scrum, positioning and assistant refereeing. The course targeted referees intending to officiate seven a -side matches. However, there were 3 active referees who attended the course as a refresher. Participants were able to attend the two day Sepetuka Sevens and observe active referees in action.
