The women’s national team, the Lionesses and defending Kenya Cup and Enterprise Cup champions KCB have earned team of the year nominations in the men’s and women’s categories of the Sports personality of The Year Awards (S.O.Y.A).

The Lionesses reached a first ever cup quarterfinal during the HSBC Women’s Sevens World Series qualifiers in Hong Kong. They were also beaten finalists at the 2017 Women’s Africa Cup Sevens in Tunisia, falling to a narrow 17-12 loss to South Africa, missing out on Africa’s sole Rugby World Cup Sevens slot but qualifying for the women’s rugby sevens event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games to be held in Gold Coast, Australia. The Lionesses are up against the volleyball national team, Malkia Strikers, national hockey champions Telkom, the Prisons and Pipeline volleyball teams and the Kenya women’s cricket national team.

KCB dominated  the 2016/17 domestic season, claiming a fifth overall Kenya Cup league title while successfully defending the Enterprise Cup for a third successive time, adding to titles won in 2004 and 2007. The bankers are up against football’s 16 time Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia, the Kenya U19 cricket national team, Strathmore handball team and Kenya Police hockey team.
