The George Mwangi Kabeberi Memorial sevens kicked off with the women’s tournament at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Friday 17th August.
The tournament saw eventual winners Menengai Cream Homeboyz win all their pool match as they beat Comras and Northern Suburbs 41-5 and 19-0. The two wins saw them qualify for the cup semifinals where they booked a date with Shamas Rugby Foundation.
Shamas had secured a semifinal slot after beating hosts Stanbic Mwamba 25-17 which was followed by a 12-12 draw with Standard Chartered Impala ladies.
The second semifinal was secured by the Standard Charted Impala ladies and Northern Suburbs ladies. Impala bagged blanked out Mwamba 29 – 0 in their first pool match before ending their second match in a 12 all draw against Shamas. Northern Suburbs on the other hand beat Comras 15-5 a win that was followed by a 19-0 loss in the hand of Homeboyz RFC.
Menengai Cream Homeboyz cruised to the final as they handed Shamas a 7-27 loss while Northern Suburbs were humbled by Impala as they were shut out of the finals after a 22-7 loss.
Mwamba and Comras met in the classification match where Mwamba bagged their second win of the day as they beat Comras 25- 17. Northern Suburbs finished third as they beat Shamas 17-0
Linet Moraa was first on the scoreboard as she landed Homeboyz’s first try with the conversion sailing wide. The Paul Murunga charges held on to the lead but it was yanked by Impala Ladies at the stroke of half time as Christabel Tata dashed for the try box and landed a center post try with Anne Koki adding the extras. Second half saw the DJz land three unconverted tries through Sophia Ayieta, Leah Njogu and Eunice Momanyi handing them the 20-7 win.
