Sepetuka Quarterfinalists Confirmed

The cup quarterfinal pairing at the Sepetuka Sevens are now know following completion of the pool matches on Saturday.

Impala play Western Bulls, Homeboyz play Nakuru, Kabras play KCB while Oilers play Quins. This is how day one played out.

KCB 20 Mwamba 15
A nervy 20-15 win saw KCB seal the second slot from Pool A in the cup quarters.Elphas Otieno put KCB 5-0 up,Ahmed Shaban missing the conversion before Stafford Abeka went over, doubling the lead for Dennis Mwanja’s charges.

Humphrey Kayange attacked and scored for Mwamba,halving the deficit for Mwamba as the half drew to a close.

Tried from Alex Aturo and Humphrey Kayange put Mwamba 15-10 after the restart but tries from Stafford Abeka and Abeka won it for KCB.

Nakuru 22 Blad 7

Levi Amunga put Blak Blad ahead,slicing through the Nakuru defense to score and convert for a 7-0 lead. Monate Akwei responded with a qucikfire try for Nakuru,the varsity side holding a slender 7-5 lead before Nelson Oyoo with a burst of speed beat his defenders to give Nakuru the lead for the first time in this game,the conversion successful for a 12-7 score. Oyoo grabbed his brace as Nakuru led 17-7 at the break.

Gramwell Bunyasi extended the lead after the break,Nakuru coasting at 22-7 and assured of the runners up position in Pool B at full time.

Homeboyz 35 Quins 7
Jeff Oluoch scored off the kickoff, Mike Wanjala converting for a 7-0 lead.

Bush Mwale’s hard running led him over the chalk,Wanjala converting for a 14-0 score, the deejays definitely taking Quins to the party. It was soon 19-0 courtesy of Oluoch, Wanjala converting for a 21-0 score before David Ambunya landed for Quins,21-7 at the break.

Humphrey Mulama landed a converted try for a 28-7 lead and it was soon 35-7 after Wanjala scored and converted. Homeboyz topping the pool.

Kabras 17 Strathmore 0

Kabras and Strathmore faced off for Pool D pole was scoreless as Dan Sikuta was sent to the bin at the close of the first half.

Dan Sikuta would atone for his indirections with a try after the restart,Kabras going 5-0 up before doubling the lead with a second try in quick succession,it was soon 17-0 for Kabras at full time.

Homeboyz, Oilers reach cup quarters as Nakuru shut out Nondies

Hosts Homeboyz posted a 26-12 win over Mean Machine to join Impala in the cup quarters. They were joined in the last eight by  Menengai Oilers topped a 50 point thriller with a 26-24 win over Blak Blad.

Top Fry Nakuru recovered from that 12-17 opening loss to the Menengai Oilers,defeating Nondescripts 29-0 to stay in contention for a cup quarterfinal berth.

Impala book cup quarterfinal berth

A hard fought 15-10 win over Mwamba secured Impala’s cup quarterfinal berth with a game to spare.Mark Kwemoi put Impala ahead with an early unconverted touch down before Derrick Mayar finished off a counter attack to see the Sarries go 10-0 up at half time.

Alex Aturo halved the deficit with an unconverted try after the break, and with the introduction of Kenya Sevens legend Humpgrey Kayange, Mwamba were looking a lot more crisp but fell further behind through Davis Makori’s try, a late touch down was not enough, Impala through to the cup quarters, Mwamba needing to overcome KCB for the second slot from Pool A.

KCB bounce back 

A 33-5 win over Catholic Monks saw KCB keep their cup quarterfinal hopes alive.Michael Kimwele, pounced on the loose ball, racing clear down the blindside to open the bankers account.

The Monks would after a decent spell of possession, level matters from a well worked build up. Stafford Abeka extended the bankers lead, Ahmed Shaban converting for a 12-5 lead at the interval.

Shaban scored and converted after the restart for a 19-5 lead as KCB finally began to assert themselves in this fixture before converting Brian Omondi’s try for a 26-5 lead. Michael Wanjala scored at full time, Isaac Njoroge with the twos to keep KCB’s cup quarterfinal hopes alive.

Bulls Upset Strathmore Leos

Western Bulls raced to a 14-0 lead before holding on to upset Strathmore Leos 14-7 in Pool D action as Kabras Sugar pulverized Makueni 41-0.

OIlers edge out Nakuru
Menengai Oilers started their campaign with a 17-12 win over Top Fry Nakuru.Philip Owuor’s unconverted try saw Nakuru take the lead but the Oilers responded in kind, Sam Muregi going over with the two sides all square, 5-5 at the break. Eric Ombasa scored after the restart as the Oilers led for the first time in this game, 12-5 with substantial time to play.

Nelson Oyoo gained good ground for the Wanyore by way of his searing run and offload but with his support arriving late to the breakdown, Oilers turned over possession and surged forward, Blastus Juma going over for their third try.

Nakuru stayed in touch, Oscar Ouma setting up Cassius Omolo for the converted try under the posts but it was not enough, Oilers winning this battle of cross town rivals from Nakuru.There were also wins for Blak Blad who pulled off a 31-12 score over Nondies,Homeboyz survived an early scare to defeat MKU Thika 29-10 and SportPesa Quins who beat Mean Machine 26-0.

Winning start for Impala

Impala took the lead through Paul Mutsami’s unconverted five pointer and Sammy Motari soon made it 10-0, racing clear to score at the corner,Mark Kwemoi sure with the conversion for a 12-0 score in a dominant first half display that was capped with Motari’s brace at the stroke of half time, the Sarries taking a 17-0 lead into the breather.

Sam Onsomu would strike after the break, Oscar Osir’s charges going 22-0 up.Isaac Njoroge struck at the death for the bankers as the hooter sounded,but Ian Mabwa responded with a try at the final whistle for the 29-5 result,a good start for Impala, a host of problems for KCB if they harbored ambitions of competing in the cup competition on Sunday.

Alex Aturo and Matt Wanjia each scored a brace,Wanjia adding four conversions that saw Mwamba take a 28-0 lead over the Catholic Monks at the interval.The Monks responded with a converted try but Mwamba back to dominate the proceedings,two converted tries for the 42-7 result.
