Wrigley’s unveils 2011 Safaricom Sevens sponsorship



The Wrigley Company (East Africa), a local subsidiary of Wm Wrigley Company and a leader in the global confectionery industry and the world’s largest manufacturer of chewing and bubble gum on Monday 17 October 2011 announced that it has signed a Kshs 1 million sponsorship agreement with the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) for the 16th Safaricom Sevens that takes place at Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium from November 4-6.

Through this relationship, Wrigley’s brands Juicy Fruit®, Wrigley’s Spearmint® and PK® -will be on sale at the Safaricom Sevens, Africa’s premier sevens rugby event as the official tournament bubble gum brands.

The synchrony between Wrigley’s and the Safaricom Sevens will make for a pleasant, refreshing experience,” said Paul Nyamodi, Acting Secretary, Kenya Rugby Union. ”

The function was also attended by the firm’s Marketing Manager, Moses Waiharo.

InterContinental appointed official tournament hotel
The same function saw the InterContinental, Nairobi; enter into a partnership with the KRU that will see it serve as the official tournament hotel for the 16th Safaricom Sevens. Under the partnership, teams and match officials will be hosted at the hotel, which is part of the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG).

“We are really excited to play host for this prestigious tournament” said Karl Hala, General Manager of the InterContinental Nairobi and Director in charge of Africa Operations for the IHG

Previously called the Safari Sevens, this tournament was first played in 1996 at Nairobi’s RFUEA Grounds. Local telecommunications firm Safaricom took over title sponsorship in 2010, resulting in the tournament being christened the Safaricom Sevens. The 2011 edition will take place between Friday 4th and Sunday 6th November at the Nyayo National Stadium, off Uhuru Highway in Kenya’s capital city, Nairobi.
