A new chapter in grassroots rugby development has begun as Pass It Back officially debuts in Kenya, marking a major milestone in the sport’s expansion. Powered by ChildFund Rugby, Kenya Rugby Union, and Menzies Aviation, this innovative program combines non-contact rugby with critical life skills training, targeting youth between the ages of 11 and 16.
The program introduces World Rugby’s T1 non-contact format, allowing young players to learn in a structured, safe, and inclusive environment. Kenya will kick off with the Playing for Equality learning season, focused on promoting leadership, inclusion, and gender equity. With more than 250 participants expected and a commitment to over 50% female participation, the initiative sets out to be a game changer for both sport and social development.
This debut aligns with Pass It Back’s celebration of 10 years of global impact, with Kenya now joining a growing number of countries using rugby to build stronger, more inclusive communities. Kenya Rugby will oversee the delivery of the program, training youth Coaches aged 16–25 to lead 90-minute sessions that blend rugby skills with life lessons that extend far beyond the pitch.
According to Thomas Odundo, CEO of Kenya Rugby Union, the initiative strengthens the development pathway by equipping young players and coaches with tools to grow both on and off the field. He emphasized that investing in the next generation is how Kenya will build a lasting legacy and make rugby a platform for personal and community growth. He also acknowledged the partnership with ChildFund Rugby as key to improving internal systems and sustainability.
During the official launch, KRU Chairperson Harriet Okatch underscored the value of the initiative, calling it an opportunity to deliver more than just rugby but also knowledge, values, and life-changing skills. She expressed gratitude to the partners and called on stakeholders to embrace rugby as a tool for transforming lives.
Mohammed Tambi, General Manager of Menzies Aviation Kenya, echoed the commitment, noting that their investment goes beyond traditional sponsorship. He described the partnership as a strategic move to empower young people, saying their goal is to leave a lasting impact on the future generation.
