Unstoppable Rugby for Change Kicks Off in Kakamega to Empower Youth and Tackle Gender-Based Violence
The transformative power of sport took center stage in Kakamega on International Women’s Day as the Unstoppable Rugby for Change project was officially launched. This national mentorship initiative harnesses the unifying spirit of rugby to champion girl child education and address the pressing issue of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) through advocacy, empowerment, and awareness.
Targeting boys and girls aged 10 to 16, the program is driven by a unique blend of SHE FOR SHE and HE FOR SHE ambassadors, a collective of rugby players, coaches, administrators, and community leaders. These ambassadors will act as role models and mentors, engaging young people in open conversations about gender equality while instilling life skills through rugby.
At least 50 women are directly involved in the program’s implementation and mentoring, reinforcing the leadership role women play in transforming their communities through sport.
“We are using rugby not just as a game, but as a movement for change,” said Harriet Okatch – Kenya Rugby Union Chairperson. “This is about giving girls and boys the confidence, tools, and support they need to challenge harmful norms and build a better future.”
The Western region rollout began in Kakamega, with plans underway to expand to Bungoma. The next stop date and venue to be confirmed. The program will gradually be introduced in other counties across the country, making it a truly national initiative.
Unstoppable Rugby for Change is more than just a sports program; it is a call to action for communities to rally behind the rights of girls and advocate for a safer, more inclusive society.
