KRU Confirms Major Partnerships Ahead of the HSBC Sevens Tournament
The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has officially confirmed partnerships with M-Pesa, SportPesa, Crown paints, Tusker, and Capital FM ahead of the HSBC SVNS 2 Tournament, set to take place on 14th – 15th February in Kenya.
The partnerships mark a major boost for the tournament as Kenya prepares to host one of the biggest rugby events in the region, bringing together elite teams from across the globe.
KRU successfully secured the hosting rights for the tournament, which will feature 12 teams competing in both the men’s and women’s categories.
The men’s teams include Kenya, USA, Uruguay, Germany, Belgium, and Canada, who qualified through the SVNS3 pathway.
The women’s competition will feature Kenya, Brazil, Spain, China, South Africa, and Argentina, also qualifiers from SVNS3.
Speaking during the announcement, KRU Vice Chairman Moses Ndale expressed pride in hosting the tournament and in the strong corporate support behind it.
“We are proud to have won the bid to host this tournament. It is a privilege to bring together top teams from across the world, and we are honoured to have partners coming on board to help us deliver a successful event.”
Safaricom, Tusker, Capital and SportPesa Come On Board
Safaricom PLC, through M-Pesa, has confirmed its sponsorship of the tournament. CEO of Safaricom money transfer service, Andrew Mutha noted the company’s commitment to supporting Kenyan rugby.
“Safaricom is proud to be associated with Kenya Rugby. We will support KRU both financially and in kind to the tune of KES 10 million to ensure the successful delivery of this tournament.”
EABL through Tusker reaffirmed its long-standing partnership with KRU, with KBL Head of Mainstream Beer, Christine Kariuki highlighting the significance of the collaboration.
“It is a pleasure to once again join hands with KRU and continue our partnership. This tournament is a milestone that demonstrates Kenya’s ability to host world-class rugby events. Further partnership details will be confirmed during our official launch with KRU.”
Capital FM has been named the official media and entertainment partner for the tournament. Speaking on behalf of Capital FM, the Managing Director Symon Bargurei, called on fans to turn up in large numbers.
“We are delighted to come on board as the official media and entertainment partner. This is the biggest rugby event in East Africa, and we urge fans to come out in large numbers to support the Lionesses and Shujaa.”
SportPesa also reaffirmed its continued support of Kenyan rugby and the national teams.
“We are very proud to be part of this journey and will continue supporting the event to ensure its success. To Kenyan fans, come out and show your love for Shujaa and the Lionesses.” said Senorine Wasike, Sportpesa Marketing Manager
Kenya Lionesses Captain Sheila Chajira thanked the sponsors for their continued support and promised strong performances on home soil.
“To our sponsors, thank you for your continued support. Come 14th -15th February, we will make you proud.”
Shujaa Co-Captain Samuel Asati echoed the confidence within both squads.
“The men’s and women’s teams are preparing well, and we are committed to making Kenya proud.”
KRU Chairperson Harriet Okach closed by thanking all partners and stakeholders, including the Government of Kenya.
