In the men’s competition, Belgium caused an upset when they beat Canada 10-7 to get their first win of the weekend. Coming into this particular game Belgium were winless from the three games played on day one and they needed a win to keep their campaign alive.

However, it was Canada who took a 7-5 lead into the break leaving Belgium with an uphill task in the second half. They however found a way through Nico Bute’s unconverted try that ended up being enough for their first win.

In the second game, Germany beat USA 28-7 to get their third win of the competition. Hugely viewed as favorites in the competition, USA found themselves stunned as Germany looked dominant and confident throughout the game.

Germany’s Captain Felix Hufnagel was instrumental to the win, contributing 16 points from two tries and three conversions to add to tries from Cedric Eichholz and Bennet Veil’s tries.

Jack Wendling’s try converted by Captain Steve Tomasin ended up being a consolation for the USA.

Speaking after the game, Germany’s Coach Pablo Feijoo pointed out that his team learnt from the mistakes that cost them the game against Kenya. “Today the boys did not make a lot of errors like we did against Kenya. That was the main difference. We learnt from our mistakes and came into the game well prepared,” said Feijoo.

In the last game of the round, the Kenya 7s team put on a dominant display to see off Uruguay 17-07. John Okoth bullied his way past Uruguay defenders to touch down at the tail end of a very cagey first half. Nygel Amaitsa converted to give Kenya a 7-0 lead at Half Time.

The second half was more entertaining from both sides. Co-Captains George Ooro and Samuel Asati both went over the line to extend Kenya’s lead. However Amaitsa was unable to convert both tries.

After both tries the pace of the game slowed down giving Uruguay a chance to score a consolation try that was also converted for a full time score of 17-7.
