A 24-12 defeat to Canada ended Kenya’s medal hopes in the women’s rugby sevens competition at the 2018 Commonwealth Games at the Robina Stadium in Gold Coast, Australia on Friday afternoon. They place South Africa in their final pool game at 5.27am on Saturday morning.

Canada went 10-0 up through unconverted tries from Julia Greenshields and Hannah Darling before captain Philadelphia Olando struck a converted try for the Lionesses but  Breanne Nicholas converted Bianca Farella’s try to give the Canadians a 17-7 lead at the interval.

Nicholas would convert Farella’s second try before Janet Okello landed a try at the death  for the Lionesses who wind up their campaign against continental rivals South Africa at 5.27am on Saturday morning.

They had started with a 45-0 defeat to New Zealand in their Pool B opener on Friday morning.

The Lionesses trailed 19-0 at the break through tries from Portia Woodman, Kelly Brazier and Gayle Broughton with Tyla Nathan-Wong kicking over two conversions.
