The Get Into Rugby (GIR) initiative continues to break new ground across Kenya, with its latest addition being Banisa Primary School in Mandera County. This expansion has been made possible through the efforts of North Eastern Kenya Rugby Union Rugby Development Officer, Mr. Beneah Omollo, who has been instrumental in introducing the sport to new regions.
As part of World Rugby’s Try, Play, Stay program, the Get Into Rugby initiative focuses on introducing the game at the grassroots level, fostering interest in the sport, and ensuring long-term participation. Schools that join the program receive training, equipment, and mentorship, allowing young players to develop fundamental rugby skills in a structured and engaging manner.
The inclusion of Banisa Primary School marks a significant step in spreading rugby to North Eastern Kenya, a region where the sport is still in its early stages. By integrating rugby into school programs, the initiative not only nurtures young talent but also promotes the core values of the game—integrity, respect, solidarity, passion, and discipline.
More schools are expected to join the movement, ensuring that rugby continues to grow beyond traditional strongholds and into every corner of the country.
