Lionesses finished sixth overall as the women’s rugby sevens competition at the Commonwealth Games concluded on Sunday 15 April 2018.
Having finished third in Pool B, they were paired against Wales in the fifth place playoff semifinal, pulling off a 14-12 win to set up a playoff final against Fiji. They trailed 0-12 against the Welsh who landed converted tries from Jasmine Joyce and Sioned Harris before Grace Okulu converted Janet Okello’s try on the stroke of half time. Okullu then converted Celestine Masinde’s game winning try.
Okulu would also score an unconverted try in the 40-5 loss to Fiji. The Lionesses are expected back in the country on Wednesday morning.
Meanwhile, Shujaa finished eighth overall in the men’s competition. After finishing second in Pool C, they were drawn against Australia in the fifth place playoff semifinal, going down 33-5 before losing 28-24 in the seventh place playoff final. Their next assignment is the HSBC Sevens World Series eighth round in Singapore on 28/29 April where they have been grouped with USA, France and England in Pool B.
