The Kenya Men and Women 7s teams, Shujaa and Lionesses, have been in training camps at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani for the last two weeks. Both sides have already qualified for the Tokyo 2020 that takes place in the next 37 days.

kru.co.ke got in touch with the two Head Coaches and this is what Innocent Simiyu had to say about the camp so far, “The camp is good. All the boys are looking sharp ticking the right boxes. When it comes to injuries, we only one player injured, Jacob Ojee but he has been going for his physiotherapy sessions to ensure he makes a full recovery.

“We are happy with how the boys have responded to the plans around kickoff, breakdowns, and game tactics. Our focus now shifts to them being able to perform in the next tournament,” he added.

In conclusion, he appreciated the Kenya Rugby Referees Association for their assistance in availing a match official to train with the team at Kasarani, “It has helped a lot especially with the training games and boardroom sessions we conduct. We wish to give a big thanks to Linus for coming through for the team,” he concluded.

Simiyu’s counterpart Felix Oloo echoed his sentiments on player improvement. “We have been working on our kickoffs during the camp because that is a very key area for us. There are different types of kickoffs and we have had scenarios where we’re working on all of them so for instance if the ball is kicked into our 22, how do¬† we get ourselves out of that area,”

“The match official has been of great help because he’s been articulating to the players the different things match officials look at during a match and especially at the breakdown area. Comparing our performance in the breakdown area, there has been improvement in this camp compared to the last one,” he added.

The Lionesses had a number of players who were in rehab during their last camp and Oloo is happy with the progress made with time. “There’s a notable improvement in their recovery and that has been very encouraging to the team,” he concluded.
