So close, so far away, that was the tale of Shujaa’s opening match at the Singapore 7s on Saturday morning as they fell to a 19-26 defeat to France in Pool C action.

Tony Omondi converted Herman Humwa’s try for a 7-0 lead before the French responded through Leraltre Paul’s try, Jean Pascal Barraque then converting Jordan Sepho’s try to give the Fench a 12-7 lead.

Omondi then converted Kevin Wekesa’s try for a 14-12 Shujaa lead at the break.

Shujaa then went 19-12 up after the restart through Omondi’s try but Barraque converted tries from Joseph Jefferson Lee’s and William Iraguha to win it for the French.

Up next is the USA at 9.24am EAT.
