The Kenya Lionesses fifteens side today kicked off a two-day alignment camp at the RFUEA Grounds as preparations begin for the upcoming Rugby Africa Women’s Cup scheduled for May later this year.A total of 48 players drawn from clubs across the country have been called up for the camp, with those currently on national Sevens duty exempted. The alignment camp aims to introduce players to the national team systems, set expectations, and establish the tone for national duty before the players return to their respective clubs for the ongoing Kenya Cup women league.
The selected players will later regroup in April when the team officially begins its preparations for the continental tournament.Speaking during the training session, the Lionesses’ head coach Simon Odongo noted that the current squad features a large pool of young players, mostly aged between 17 and 23. He explained that the group brings a combination of versatility and fresh energy, which will complement the experience of the previously retained players within the setup.
He further underscored the importance of the alignment camp, saying it offers an opportunity to assess the players while getting them ready for national duty. He also emphasized that the call-up should serve as motivation, reminding the players that they remain on the national team radar even as they return to their clubs, and should therefore maintain strong performances in their respective competitions.
