A rugby team is only as good as its players, and the players are only as good as the fitness, skills and commitment they possess. Developing these aspects of the players you have is crucial to achieving success, and having innovative and engaging training programs in place is a great way to attract new players to your club.

Kenya Harlequin FC is proud to present its Long Term Player Development Model through Vandals RFC, formerly referred to as Quins III or Pinocchio’s (a development outfit targeting players under the age of 21 years). This new model will provide an integrated framework to facilitate the development of young rugby players at all levels of participation and experience. It outlines a philosophy of sound practice and long-term participation, performance and enjoyment of Kenyan rugby.

“The team will operate independently and will be managed by a separate team but will still remain under the larger Quins family brand” added Quins Chairman Mike Lucas.

The nature of rugby development requires a close examination of the demands of the game itself at each stage, as well as the capacities of players. This analysis, coupled with extensive validation from coaches at Kenya Harlequin, resulted in the establishment of Player Capacities across 5 specific areas: Technical, Tactical, Physical, Mental and Lifestyle.

An integral aspect of the Long Term Player Development (LTPD) model is the “essence” of Player, Game and Coach at every stage – this single word summation of the characteristics of these three components throughout the stages acts as a guideline to all participants.

The true effectiveness of the Vandals RFC program will be evidenced by its integration into all of Quins and Ultimately Kenya Rugby structures and systems, and by the rewarding experiences of players, coaches, parents, referees, supporters and administrators of the game.

Amos Agiro the Vandals Coach outlined the goals for the program:

  • Create a supportive rugby environment that players, their family and friends are proud of and want to be part of.
  • Develop all players and nurture their talents so that they can reach their true potential.
  • Create awareness within the local community that Vandals RFC is a club that has a place for young players, whether still in high school or recently completed. Players who would otherwise not get a chance to develop due to the stiff competition present in the main club outfits.

More information on how you can support the team will be shared as the season continues, for more contact info@quins.co.ke
