The penultimate round of the 2019 Stanbic Bank National Sevens Circuit kicked off in pure style at the RFUEA Grounds. The tournament featured the Women’s 7s festival that had six teams competing for the overall prize of Kshs. 100,000.
Nondies kicked off the Day one action with a close 10 -5 win over the Strathmore Leos before Stanbic Mwamba cruised to a comfortable 34-0 win over the Egerton Wasps in the Pool A matches. Kulabu went ahead to finish top of their pool after securing three out of three wins by beating Nondies 24-0 and Strathmore Leos 14-12. Despite their loss to Mwamba, Nondies confirmed their place in the Cup quarterfinals after beating Egerton Wasps 31-0. Strathmore Leos had a tough day in office where they managed to bag one win over the Wasps, a performance that saw them and Egerton drop to Challenge Trophy.
Pool B: Resolution Impala Saracens started off their Day one action with a 17-17 draw with the tournament hosts and next door neighbour Kenya Harlequins before improving on their match two and three performances where they beat their opponents Stanbic Pirates 38-5 and Menengai Cream Homeboyz 17-5 to go top of the Pool. The Deejays loss to the Sarries saw them finish second in the Pool with Kenya Harlequins and Stanbic Pirates finishing third and fourth respectively.
Pool C: Top Fry Nakuru RFC confirmed their spot in the cup quarterfinal after their second match when they beat Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology 24-12. This win came after a 19-5 over Blakblad earlier in the day. MMUST beat Kabras 19-12 in their opening fixture while Kabras beat Blakblad 12-7. Kabras dropped to the Challenge Trophy after their 12-36 loss to Nakuru in the last pool match while MMUST’s 17-17 draw with Blakblad assured them of their top eight spot.
Pool D: KCB topped this Pool with their 17-5, 24-7 and 24-5 wins over Northern Suburbs, Daystar Falcons and Menengai Oilers respectively. The sensational Oilers booked their Cup quarterfinal spot with their 29-5 win over Daystar and 29-19 win over the Northern Suburbs. Daystar and Cubs dropped to the Challenge Trophy after losing two and three matches.
