The Trees for Tries project, sponsored by the Kenya Power Foundation in collaboration with the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) and the Play Green Initiative by Kevin Wekesa, is continuing to create a positive environmental impact through rugby.
The initiative was launched during the inaugural leg of the 2026 HSBC SVNS Division 2 in Nairobi, with the aim of planting a tree for every try scored while using rugby to promote environmental conservation.
The project continued in Kisumu during the Dala7s, where 410 trees were planted across Otieno Oyoo High School, Kisumu Polytechnic and Mamboleo Stadium. The exercise was graced by Dala7s Tournament Director Robert Wechesi and Kenya Forest Service officer Philemon.
Last week, the initiative moved to Nakuru, where another 400 trees were planted at Nakuru Teachers Comprehensive, Nakuru West Comprehensive, Pangani Comprehensive Schools and Nakuru Athletics Club.
The Nakuru exercise was attended by Felix Okoth, a Nakuru player and Shujaa international. Kenya Forest Service officer Shadrack Liyayi also took the children through different tree species and demonstrated the proper process of planting trees.
The Trees for Tries project will continue throughout the 2026 SportPesa National Sevens Circuit, with the next exercise set to take place during this weekend's Kabeberi7s in Nairobi.
